West Midlands NO!

Regional government: unelected, undemocratic, unaccountable and unwanted

Anti-Regions Petition

Posted by wonkotsane on November 25, 2006

There is a petition on the Prime Minister’s website asking the Prime Minister to abolish the unelected regional assemblies in the UK:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to abolish the Regional Assemblies in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

We disagree with the imposition of an un-elected level on the citizens of the UK. The Regional Assemblies were brought about by the 1957 Treaty of Rome and do not have the support of the majority of British citizens. We disagree that council tax money is used to finance these un-elected bodies – there must be no taxation if there is no representation. These bodies are an attempt to destroy the UK and for the UK to be subsumed into a socialist federal state of Europe.

I have signed it for all the good it will do!

Something I have been thinking about is if the Conservatives win the next election they have promised to abolish the Regional Assemblies in England, will they also abolish the motivation for the Regional Assemblies, which was original defined to channel regional opinions to the Regional Development Agencies.

It is the Regional Development Agencies which were set up to receive and distribute our funds, returned by the EU, the assemblies were only ever intended as a political oversight of the RDA`s so removing the Assembly (other than being a point scored) will make no perceivably difference.

The RDA for the West Midlands is Advantage West Midlands and they have a budget of £10bn for next year!
